Biden’s nominations include experts from diverse disciplines
Top members of President-elect and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s health team have been handpicked and include a state attorney general who supports the Affordable Care Act and other long-term care industry initiatives, as well as a team of COVID-19 experts.
The Attorney General of California and former member of Congress, Xavier Becerra has been nominated to replace current Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar. The Biden-Harris transition team believes that Becerra is “a long-time champion of expanding access to healthcare”. According to the Biden-Harris team, Becerra played a major part in the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
Current Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Redfield will be replaced by virus expert Rochelle Walensky, M.D. Walensky is an expert on virus testing, prevention, and treatment. As Chief of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, she has been at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic in Massachusetts. She is also a lecturer at Harvard Medical School.
Anthony Fauci, M.D. will continue on as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and has been nominated for Chief Medical Adviser to Biden on COVID-19.
According to the Biden-Harris transition team, their choices are based on these people being, “experts in their fields who will restore public trust in the pandemic response by leading with facts, science, integrity, and a laser-focus on bringing COVID-19 under control”.
