COVID-19 cases at an all time low

A hot topic brought to you by SpecialtyRx, your partner in long-term care

According to a new report issued by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, COVID-19 cases in U.S. nursing homes are at their lowest since federal officials began tracking cases.

The report is based on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data through March 7th and indicates that there is a 96% decline in cases and a 91% decline in COVID-related deaths in nursing homes since December 20th. But experts warn that now is not the time to get lax. According to Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL,

“We are not out of the woods yet, but these numbers are incredibly encouraging and a major morale booster for frontline caregivers who have been working tirelessly for more than a year to protect our residents. This trend shows that when long-term care is prioritized, as with the national vaccine rollout, we can protect our vulnerable elderly population.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting at least 2.1 million long-term care residents have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination dose. However, with the federal campaign coming to an end for nursing homes, it will be up to every state and facility to create vaccine programs to ensure continued vaccination of every resident and staff member.
