Therapy cuts planned for 2021

A hot topic brought to you by SpecialtyRx, your partner in long-term care

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services cuts therapy payments for nursing home patients by 9%

Senior living providers will have to be proactive and get creative with therapy partners to gauge the repercussions of the Medicare payment reductions and ensure residents have continued access to services.
Effective January 1, 2021, payment for physical, occupational and speech-language therapy for nursing home patients was cut by 9%. The decision came in early December and has rocked therapy providers and long-term care advocates. Many are asking Congress to step in.
The cut impacts patients directly as it means a decrease in available services. According to Cynthia Morton, Executive Vice President of the National Association of Support for Long Term Care,

“The action that CMS took to finalize these policies that impact nursing facility patients is shocking in that CMS is significantly cutting services that help our patients recover from COVID or keep themselves healthy and hopefully not succumb to COVID-19.”

Despite what happens, concerned therapists and facilities will find a way ensure services are provided to those who need it.
